Happy Valentine's Day!

The boys wanted something special for their Valentine's cards this year. They love buying the mustaches out of the quarter machines so I came up with this. Hope you enjoy it! Pinterest is an on line pin board. They have everything you can possible want. Cool photography, party ideas, food ideas, home decorating, holiday musing, art, fitness... Seriously I can not say enough great things about this place. As you can see here, Pinterest I have pinned more than 1,700 things. Feel free to follow one or all of my boards.

I would like to give away several sessions. These sessions must be completed by March 31, 2012. Create a pin board with your session in mind. Do you need to plan a birthday party? Looking for something fun and different? Have a photography/scrapbooking party. Each child will have a chance to take photos with real digital cameras, the images will be printed and then everyone gets to make a scrapbook out of the prints from the same day.

Digital Collections now for Sale

I have been asked several times over the years if I offer digital collections. I have only offered two small options. This coming year will be the first time you will be able to purchase 20 or more printable images from your session.

Since we have never before offered digital collections, this is the one and only chance to obtain sessions from 2010 and earlier. They will be deleted from our working hard drive forever by Feb. 1, 2012. These sessions are at a greatly reduced price.

If you HAVE placed a print order from a 2011 session, you may also purchase a digital collection.

This image is of my husband in front of one of the homes he grew up in. He though his mom and dad would really love the same photo they took of him on his 1st birthday again some 30 years later. This time the photo includes our sons. We gave the images to his mom and it took her a few minutes, however she recognized the house and it brought back a flood of memories.
Life changes. Sons become fathers. Parents become grandparents. Families grow as children become adults. Memories last as long as we keep them alive. As a little girl, my cousins would call me an old lady because I wanted to sit with my aunts and grandma. I wanted to listen to the stories that were being relived. I wanted to remember.
As I am sitting here writing this, I received a package from my Great Aunt Rita containing photos from the early 1900's of family members. I love looking at the their clothing and figuring out who and how they are related. My sister decided to go on to ancestry.com to start to figure out our family tree. I was surprised how little she knew. She was surprised at how much I remembered. I attribute it to my childhood "old lady days".
Photos are a great way of connecting the dots - past, present and future. Why do you take photos?

Model T sessions

Sunday October 16 we are offering sessions with a 1926 Model T. Your child will be able to sit in and on the Model T, pretend to drive and fix it too! This is a once in a lifetime chance to play and discover just like any child LOVES to do. If your little guy loves cars and trucks this is the session for him.

You may come all dress up or just in jeans and a white tee shirt. The options are limitless. These sessions will be perfect for Christmas cards as well.

Sessions are limited.
$100 session fee is due at the time of scheduling your appointment.
You will receive an 8x10.
Each appointment is 45 minutes.
Your on line gallery will be ready within 10 days for viewing. You may submit your order via email or you may schedule an in person ordering session.
Rain day will be October 30 and you will keep the time of your original appointment.

Here they all are. 2 Grandparents, 4 children and spouses, and 11 grandchildren. We managed to fit into the studio for a fun family session during Christmas break. Too bad it was too cold to go outside. Although I'm not sure visitors from FL would have appreciated it, even if we Michiganders would have thought it was warm enough. Inside or out, I enjoyed the company! Enjoy your sneak peak!

Mini session are 30 minute sessions in Mt. Clemens (outdoors) or at the studio (depending on the weather).

You will receive an 11x14, (2)5x7 and a set of 24 5x7 custom cards with envelopes for $225.
All of your prints will be mounted on museum quality backing, textured with a rich linen texture and UV spray protected. This will ensure they will not bend, crack or rip. They are guaranteed to last 100+ years.

Santa is coming to town and he'll be at my studio.

Schedule an appointment for your personal mini session with just your family and Santa. No waiting in long lines at the mall. No rushing! Children are amazed when Santa knows their name and what they want for Christmas.

The sessions are 15 minutes and your ordering appointment is immediately after your session. You will receive your prints about 14 days later.

We have an English Bulldog named Artie. He is 19 months old and very sick. Recently in our local paper the Eastsider there was a story about a dog that contracted Leptospirosis. After we read the article we scheduled an appointment for Artie to get the vaccination. Apparently we were just a few days too late. Please I beg of you, if you live in the area it's only a $20 vaccine. Call your vet today.
It is not confirmed 100% because the blood work is not back from the lab being a holiday weekend, however it is suspected to be what he has. Even though we caught it early and he's healthy and young, he still only has a 60% chance of survival. We would appreciate any good thought or prayers for our little guy. Here are a few photos of our family.

Op Love Re United

I am a volunteer photographer for a group called Operation Love ReUnited. The chairty is for service members who have orders to deploy or are already deployed and their families. I really enjoy these sessions as much as I wish there wasn't a need for them. Each time a child is separated from their parent or husband from his wife, I cry. I cry even harder at the reunions. I am grateful to help in this small way. (At least it makes me feel like I'm helping the families.) They are really the ones helping all of us. Here are a few images from two recent sessions. One home coming and one deployment. The man in the top few images is still deployed. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.

I'm glad I made this long journey out to this senior in her neck of the woods because the locations sure were worth it. I have wanted to photograph someone in or near a covered bridge. This one is on private property and filled with old farm equipment and tools. It was super cool. (We did have permissions to be there.) Then the wheat field and the the railroad tracks. All were new experiences for me. I loved every minute of it! Thanks again for introducing me to all of your favorite spots. They are now mine too!

Grand Opening Party

We've moved, painted, refinished the floors, finally had central air installed and we can't wait any longer to show off our space! We still have a few more things we would like to do, however it's presentable.
There will be fun story time for the kids and a HUGE coloring area, food from the Vintage House and my mom's kitchen, new art work on the walls, a slide show and of course PRIZES!

Yes, it’s true…

To my wonderful clients at Jamie Fodale Photography, whom can't believe this to be true and to whom I've turned down and referred to other wedding photographers, because “I don't do weddings.” I've always said there are a few main reasons for that decision. First it is imperative that you have a great partner, assistant, second shooter and just someone you can truly rely on. I did not have that until now. Second it is a MUST to have 2 of everything. Set of hands, equipment, brains... I did not have that until now either. Third is the sheer amount of work that goes into a wedding venture. I could not handle the shooting, editing, marketing, meeting clients, taking orders, delivering, ect all by myself. Now I have it all!

Hello! Greg here. Croft and Campbell Photography was a partnership with my cousin Jennifer. While Jennifer and I made a fantastic team, it was recently discovered that Jennifer is expecting her first child this summer. I know this wasn’t an easy decision for her, but after much thought and deliberation, she has decided to become a stay at home mom and spend time taking care of herself and her new baby. Jamie and I both wish Jennifer and her husband Rob nothing but the best.

Truth be told, I wholeheartedly agree with Jamie. The style and quality of art work I deliver to you, simply could not be done alone.

What the future holds…

We are very excited about the future of the wedding department at Jamie Fodale Photography. We have major news happening in the near future and will share it here first.

Greg and I have worked together for years. We find strengths in each other that we do not possess within ourselves. We are individuals with a common vision.

What that means for you is one rocking team to create an even better wedding day than you could have imagined! I'm serious!
You should enjoy the day and of course the party you've spent so much time planning. You should barely know we are there. If you are all about fun, unique, romantic, beautiful art work you won't be disappointed.
You've stood up in a wedding where the photographers took FOREVER to get all of the formal poses out of the way. Believe me, that will not happen. It's our least favorite part of the day too! You want to have fun? We do to! And we want to photograph you having fun – that's the fun part for us.

It was a whirl wind experience meeting Jared and Erica just like their engagement. They met, were engaged and married in 4 months. Their engagement session was a great first meeting. Their wedding was short and sweet just like their engagement. It was personal, beautiful and complete. We were happy to photograph their wedding. It was a great start to our 2010 season!

Op Love Re United

I met this family only days before Daddy was being deployed. I work with an origination called Operation Love Re-United. I love these sessions and at the same time there is such a sadness. When I was younger, my father traveled a lot for work. I know what it's like being a kid and not seeing one of your parents everyday. It's a tough thing to go through for everyone.
I appreciate every service member. Their time, dedication and family separation. Please keep this family in your prayers and I can't wait to photograph the Reunion when he returns home!

It has been a ridiculous long time since I've updated my blog. I promise I will never let it go this long again!
Tons of changes are happening. We have moved our studio from the very cold space without heat to a wonderful location at 28063 Gratiot in Roseville. I am planning a Grand Opening Party, however we have a few last things to finish before the party date can be set.
I am joining forces with Greg Croft from Croft and Campbell Photography. We are creating two separate companies. One will be dedicated to wedding photography and the other to boudoir photography. The new web sites and blogs are not fully operational, when they do become functioning, you will be the first to find out. Jamie Fodale Photography will still be what it is today. I am just taking advantage of the opportunities I have been given. Greg is a great asset to me and I hope I am to him as well.

I only have a billion photos to upload. I will be having a serious catch up with my blog tonight and all of next week. Until then...

Congratulations!

Stephanie and Bryan were engaged just before Christmas. They decided to have a winter snow session. I was very excited. They even indulged me and got down into the very cold snow. As you can see neither of them were wearing jackets. It was VERY cold, but I think now that we are all thawed out, it was great time.

We took the boys to the Troy Museum and Historic Village. They had a blast. It was a self guided tour of 10 houses and a small scavenger hunt. There was a press printer and 2 black smiths working. We were able to watch them and ask questions. We sat in a school house and drew on the slates with chalk just like the children did many years ago. You can see Daddy in the back ground of the school house photo.
And of course just like everywhere else we go, we had a light saber fight. It was a good day!

Little Brother is Becoming the Big Brother

My Christams cards

I know when LOTS of parents leave our sessions I reassure them that we have cute images because they think their child was "uncooperative." It's intimidating sometimes for a child to enter a big dark scary room with props and big flashing lights. They may get up from the "posed" position for what seems like the millionth time, but I won't let you leave unless I know I've got some great images.
Just to prove my point I love to share just a few of the out takes from sessions with my sons. This is just a few of my favorite outtakes from our 300+ image session. (I still didn't get exactly what I wanted, but I have a few that will work.)

Ethan is my best friend Tricia's little boy. He is SUPER smart, very sweet and just an all-around great kid. He loves super heroes as does every 5-year-old -- he takes great care of his "guys" and I think he has inherited his mother's OCD. There is NEVER a toy out of place.

From Day One, he always reminded me of his daddy, Danny. The older he gets, the more the resemblance. His smile, sense of humor and a bit of his personality, too. Here's to hoping he gained his daddy cooking skills as well! Looking at these images of Ethan, all I could see was Danny. Ethan's daddy lost his battle to cancer in 2006.
I LOVE these images of Ethan. We had so much fun during our session. I rarely get to spend time with just him and Tricia. My boys are always yelling in the back ground ;) So our photo session was a treat.
When I look at these photos, I’m little sad, too. I'm not sure if it's because Ethan's getting so big -- it seems much too fast! Look at how little he was in the photos with his mommy. Maybe I was feeling the season, or missing Danny, or just amazed as how much Ethan really looks like his daddy in all these images. Maybe I’m missing seeing Danny and Ethan together. It could be a combination of all of the above, I'm not sure. I can only imagine the goofy things Danny would have Ethan say and do at this age. Maybe that, above all.

Look at what Santa brought my mom for Christmas. Good thing my dad was hunting when Teddy arrived. Not sure he would have been able to stay.
Teddy was needed my mom's bff Militmeter AKA Millie passed away early last spring and it was time for her to get a new one. He is a spunky little thing, but boy is he cute!

Of course my boys had to have a crazy face photo with Santa. Who doesn't?

I love that these two families used the next two images as their Christmas cards. I can't wait to see them!

Your time with Santa is so personal and not rushed. You have a scheduled time. There will be no waiting in long lines like the mall. Yeah! They get it!

Sometimes I feel pressured to give a client what they are expecting. To me, these type of sessions feel forced. It's my fault. The entire session I am thinking is this what they are looking for? I'm not sure I have a "good one" (parent terms=child looking straight into the camera with a huge smile.) Some parents want this photo even if it is not how their child would normally behave or look. All I can hear in my head, which I will never say is "Say CHEESE!"

Sometimes I just photograph without any exceptions and my results are so much more complementary to the family and child. The child isn't forced, they have fun and I can breath.

This is exactly the type of session this was! I love that Mom and Dad liked my favorite images. They didn't care if both children's portrait were in black and white or color or if they were mixed. Whatever looked best is what they wanted. They loved the walking photo as much as I did. Thank you for getting me! It was a pleasure photographing you.

I've known Gina and Jimmy since high school. Back then (and even now) you would have never thought of them ending up together, but they did. And boy are they good for each other! It's fun to watch people who just get each other. The people that really get us, really understand us, understand our own flaws and love us even more because of them. Because the flaws are what makes us who we are. That's the couple Gina and Jimmy are. Congratulations guys! I'm so happy you found love on a weekend camping trip among all of our friends. Who knew?

My husband reads all of my blog entries and he rarely says anything about my posts. When he read this entry he said it sounded like I was saying Jimmy and Gina have a ton of flaws and are dysfunctional, but they love each other. Sorry if anyone else read this the same way my husband did.

TOTALLY NOT WHAT I MEANT!

Gina LOVES the black and white image of Jimmy with a smirk on his face. She said, "I LOVE that one! It's totally him!" LOTS of women would have passed that image by because it's not the typical stand straight and look into the camera with a huge smile that your mom will love photo. She didn't care what anyone else thought of it. She loved it.

I just meant it's nice that 2 people love each other "Just the way they are." (A quote from Bridget Jones Diaries.) They're not trying to change each other or be someone they're not. They are just themselves. It's refreshing and fun to be around. It's not forced or unnatural. They are just good together.

Color Color Everywhere

This fall was cold and brief, however we did have super beautiful colors all around us. This little guy was on the go and I'm so glad he hung around this spot for a few minutes. I love the colors of his clothing and the trees behind him. Gorgeous! This is why we Michiganders put up with all of the other crazy weather. (At least that's why I do;)

Look at her little scrunched up nose! OMG! TOO CUTE! I was hoping mom and dad wouldn't be mad at me for posting this photo. They saw all of the images yesterday and laughed just like I did every time we came back to this photo. Mommy even said she kind of looked like a little Bull Dog. Maybe that's why I like this one so much.

Spooktactular Halloween Event

Hello to all of the ghosts and goblins out there. Jamie Fodale Photography will be hosting a Spooktactular event at our studio in Harrison Twp. October 25 starting at noon we will be holding mini sessions and taking photos of you in your Halloween costumes. Come all dressed up and have your photo taken on our Spooktactular set. Mom and Dad won't have to worry about finding the camera before Trick or Treating begins. You can just enjoy the evening!

The session will be a mini 10-minute session which will be plenty of time. You will select your images immediately after your session and you will have them in about 14 days. In order to schedule a session, you must purchase one of the packages below which start at $25. A la Carte items are available as well.

This is my beautiful cousin. She lives out of state, however they were in town for a visit and I had the pleasure of taking her senior photos. We made it a 2 day event and squeezed in almost a million locations. Seriously! Ask her! It was a different experience for me. We drove in the same car to all of the locations. (which I've never done.) Along the way, we'd stop at some roadside crazy overgrown place and we'd get out of the car, snap a few or 30 images and hop back in the car. We had an original destination in mind. Sometimes we made it sometimes we didn't. I think I'm going to start suggesting driving with all of my seniors. Tons of cool places along the way. I guess we took the time to stop and smell the roses.

Here are 2 more Urban Models. We went to Royal Oak and walked around. These two are opposite and that's what I love about them. She is outgoing, full of passion and personality. Her brother is a little more reserved and quite, however don't be confused with that meaning not having tons of ENERGY! And of course, they both are GORGEOUS!

Am I really old enough to know someone as a child and now they're graduatiing from high school? I guess so. We also wanted to include Jimmy's little sister and a family portrait.

These two look so much alike, however they have their own little personalities. I love how even at this age you can just imagine what they want to say to you. I know they were thinking I was crazy and that's ok. Lots of people think that and I don't let it bother me. Or I could see they had enough of my camera and I. Urban kid and a new baby!

Well this family certainly had a busy month! First was our lovely Urban Kid Model. Isn't she so stinkin' cute? And yes her hair is purple. She had been asking for purple hair and her mom thought there wouldn't be a better time than our session to try it out! I was so excited! They were both troopers and we rocked our session.

On 4th of July the same day as his Grandma the newest addition to the family decided to make his arrival! He is so sweet. He slept almost our entire session. (I love when that happens!) Take care and enjoy

This is my beautiful niece Paige. Full of personality and spunk! I have to say this was our best session yet. We only used one location, she was cooperative and of course great photos. Can you believe all of these images were taken using one building? Each wall of this building was fantastic in it's own way.

Our model search for our Urban Kid Collection is still on going. We are looking for boys and girls for sessions in a downtown setting, with fun clothing and great personalities. I've know Danielle and Mark since Jr. High school. They've dated as long as Tony and I and now they have joined the new parent club. Drake is as cute as can be! Danielle and Mark have traveled and moved around tons. Hopefully one day they can move back home;) It would be great to see them more often. Take care and have a safe return home.

This family won a silent auction photography package. I donated a print package to
The Arts Academy in the Woods. It is a wonderful high school dedicated to artistic young adults wanted to excel in their field of interest. They have everything from photography, to band, drama, dance and so much more. The students have a regular curriculum and then their electives are in subjects that interest them. It seems like a great school. Congratulations and thank you for supporting this wonderful school.

Some very good friends of mine are expecting their first baby in just a few short weeks. Since they are friends, I took advantage of the situation and tried out a few new ideas on them. (Yes some people may think of them as guinea pigs, but I choose to call it friends with benefits.) Either way...I'm so glad they were accommodating because I could not just choose my usual 3 or 4. To all aspiring photographers. Weather you're interested in just taking better photos of your everyday life or becoming a professional here are some things that have helped me along the way.

I became a professional photographer by accident. I was Vice President of Internal Operations for a large furniture company. I was laid off after working there for 8 years. I searched for a long time to find another position that I would enjoy and could have a career I would love. After a long search and photographing on the side for almost 2 years, my husband suggested I start taking myself seriously. He believed in me and my work and said to go for it. If it wasn't for the push from him, I don't think I would have dreamed of starting my business.

I read a TON! Understanding Exposure is a great way to learn about photography. It's a wonderful introduction and will give you a good basic understanding on how lighting and functions of your camera interact. Read your camera manual and then reread it again. You will find valuable information in there. I still carry mine in my camera bag.

I took as many classes as I could. I still attend seminars to keep up on trends and get new ideas.

Join a photography forum. Have your peers critique your images. I truly believe its an invaluable way to improve. Don't take the comments personally. Sometimes they are harsh, mostly helpful and you will discover things about your work, you never would have. People will give helpful tips and tricks. It was on forums that I discovered my personal style.

If you are interested in becoming a professional...There are so many people who can afford professional level equipment and can gain the same knowledge you can. You honestly have to be on your top game. You have to be 10x better than the people around you for you to stand out. You've got to discover what it is that makes you different. It's so easy for anyone to get a website or blog up and going. Search the web and you will see some amazing work and some awful work. You have to educate your clients. If your clients are educated, then your work has to be top notch. You won't be able to fool them, however they will appreciate good quality work and know the difference.

Practice, Practice, Practice. I'm still learning and evolving as a photographer. I don't want to be in such a rut that photography is not fun any more or that all of my clients have the same pose with the same prop on their walls. Every session is custom and I wouldn't have it any other way. I still love photography as much as I did when I was in third grade. I'm still excited to get my prints back from the lab. To keep up the fun, I schedule at least one experimental session just for me each month.

The 3 Boys

Tony and I had quite an elaborate plan to surprise Anthony and Vinny with Artie. They were so excited and almost surprised. We changed the plan at the last minute due to the weather. We walked into the house and Artie's new doggy bed is near the front door. Anthony said, "A dog bed? Oh my gosh Vinny we're getting a puppy." As Tony was bringing him up the stairs. He is too smart for his own good sometimes. He's like a little detective who forgets NOTHING!

Anthony likes and plays with him more than I was expecting and Vinny loves him just as much as I had thought he would. Artie and Vinny will be life long pals. Vin lays on the floor next to Artie's bed while he is sleeping. Vinny is secretly trying to wake him up, however that is one tough task. I swear the puppy sleeps more than I did in my first trimester of pregnancy. Artie is Vinny's only friend while Anthony is away at school all day.

Tony and I wanted to get a photo of the boys with the puppy. I want a HUGE canvas for my newly painted kitchen walls. I think Tony was a little annoyed when I asked him to come with us. I'm sure he was thinking of a few hours to himself.. She does this all of the time by herself...Why does she need me to come anyway? What he must have forgotten is, usually I have the parents of the child I am photographing at the studio as well. Now while I'm photographing my own children I am no longer a parent I'm the crazy photo lady, who lets them jump on my bed, have wild light saber battles and put mud all over their bodies. Add a puppy to the mix and watch out. After it was all said and done, Tony said to me, "There is no way you would have been able to do the session alone." Really? I thought;)

Catching up

Lots has happened in the past few weeks...

Jen and Greg from Croft and Campbell are moving out of the studio. I am so sad about this first bit of news. I have enjoyed working with them so much. They decided they weren't using the camera room and are making a few changes to their business. While I am happy for them, I still want to be selfish and keep them. I'm speaking with a few other photographers in hopes to be able to stay at the studio. I enjoy it there and am not quite ready to move out.

Artie, our new puppy moved in.

My little sis Cait turned 30! Happy belated Birthday old lady. And she'll be back in town for a quick weekend visit.

There are a few other exciting new things happening at Jamie Fodale Photography. You'll just have to keep posted until they are official.

One thing I can mention now is a feature article in The Bump a new local maternity magazine. It is a free publication owned by the same company as theknot.com, a helpful wedding web site for the bride to be. If you see it in stores pick one up for me. The Knot also has a web site for thebump.com and thenest.com. The article will contain images from a maternity and new born session of twins. I photographed them almost a year ago! I can't wait for their first birthday session. Two one-year olds and a cake! Messy, but fun! here is their new born session and also the maternity session.

Pretty in Pink and Blue

Artie - 8 weeks

We visited Artie last week. He gained 3 pounds in 1 week! Here are a few more photos of him. He's on top in the middle of the group photo. We will be bringing him home on Tuesday and the boys still have no idea. I can't wait to see the look on their faces. We have an elaborate scheme to show them both at the same time while Tony is home from work. Tough, not impossible. Anthony will be on his lunch break at school and we're worried, he won't want to go back. I can't wait to have our first studio session with the three boys. I am getting a HUGE canvas for my newly painted kitchen. Until then here you go!

Tragedy-4 teens killed by a drunk driver

I'm sure, if you live in the area, you've heard about the tragic accident where a drunk driver hit and killed 4 Lakeshore teens. I have known one of the teen's uncle since kindergarten. The community has been in shock and now it has wrapped their arms around the teen's families. People have donated anything and everything they could. Private citizens, Kaul Funeral Home, Viviano's and several restaurants just to name a few.
On Sunday, March 29 a bowling benefit at Continental Lanes beginning at 8am and ending at 11am. You can bowl 2 games for $20, shoe rental will be included as well as a raffle ticket for a door prize. Some great items will be raffled off...signed and stamped Red Wings hockey sticks, a rare Stanley Cup signed jerseys and 4 tickets to a game as well as a tour of the locker room after the game. Buffalo Wild Wings, 2 months free gym membership, tanning packages and I have also donated a photography package valued at $415.

Congratulations Debbie and Jeff!

Debbie seriously talked me into photographing her wedding. She was so laid back about everything. There were about 40 guests. Simple and elegant was the theme of the day. Baby James was a perfect angel. He was awake, he slept, he let us move him, and check out the peace sign he flashed me! What else could I have asked for? He has the coolest hot air balloon mobile above his crib. I love the blanket from his room so I just had to use it for his photos. Congratulations mom and dad. He really is as sweet as can be.
